February 2011 Fighter Rankings

I’ve updated the fighter rankings for February 2011.  January rankings can now be found in the archives.  Here are the changes made for the month.

Heavyweight

  • Fedor dropped two spots after his loss to Antonio Silva, while Silva jumped up 4 spots.
  • Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvai fell out of the rankings with bad losses during the month, making way for M-1’s Shamil Abdurahimov and the UFC’s Jon Masden.

Light Heavyweight

  • Not a lot of room for Jon Jones to move up with a win, but beating Ryan Bader moved him to the top five.  Bader, meanwhile, dropped three spots to number eight.
  • Forrest Griffin also moved up a single spot, while Rich Franklin fell from 13 to 15.
  • Trevor Prangley is now unranked after losing to Luiz Cane.  The impressive Strikeforce prospect Ovince St. Preux is now ranked number 25.

Middleweight

  • Vitor Belfort’s crushing loss to UFC Champion Anderson Silva dropped him down to number 8
  • Meanwhile, Robbie Lawler’s loss to Jacare dropped him to 14 and bumped Jacare up two spots and into the top five.

Welterweight

  • Nick Diaz’s win over Cyborg Santos moved him ahead of Josh Koscheck as the number six welterweight.
  • Mike Swick fell out of the rankings due to inactivity and Mike Pierce jumps to number 25, helped by an impressive win at UFC 126.

Lightweight

  • Evan Dunham’s loss to Melvin Guillard was doubly impactful.  I didn’t really consider his loss to Sean Sherk to be an issue, but now a loss to Guillard is two straight.  My confidence in Dunham has dropped, moving him to 16th.  Guillard takes a huge jump from 21 to 12, largely in part to my underrating him to begin with.
  • Mizuto Hirota hasn’t fought since this happened over a year ago, moving Yves Edwards into the top 25.

Featherweight

  • In another instance of me overrating a fighter, Michihiro Omigawa plummets to number 10 after a loss to Chad Mendes, while Mendes climbs to number 6.
  • Off a win over former WEC Champion Mike Brown in his featherweight debut, Rani Yahya comes in at number 12 on the rankings.  Brown drops down to 20.
  • George Roop drops a few spots after losing to Mark Hominick, but remains ranked.  Hominick looked impressive, but only moved up one spot.

Bantamweight

  • Demetrious Johnson managed a win over Japanese great Kid Yamamoto, which I thought was impressive enough to move him up to number 10.
  • Rani Yahya moving to featherweight opened a spot at bantamweight for King of the Cage 135 lbs. champion Jimmie Rivera.

Flyweight

  • No change, but the Tachi Palace Fights card this Friday should make a big impact on the rankings.

Women’s Middleweight

  • No change.

Women’s Welterweight

  • Germaine de Randamie looked good in her win over Stephanie Webber at Strikeforce’s January show.  She moved from 14 to 12.
  • Kaitlin Young dropped out of the rankings due to inactivity and Alexandra Sanchez is now ranked at 15.

Women’s Lightweight

  • No Change

Women’s Featherweight

  • Yuka Tsuji has been inactive since February 11, 2010 and is no longer ranked.  Veteran Lacey Schuckman is now the 15th ranked women’s featherweight.

I’ve worked to simplify the rankings, since I didn’t like how cluttered they were before.  They should be a bit easier to follow.  I’ve also included fight results and upcoming fights on each specific page of rankings, which should help to provide some additional information.  Beginning in March, the rankings will be updated at the first of the month.  This will be a short turnaround between the February and March rankings, but it should be consistently 30 days between rankings going forward.

Tomorrow, I should be able to complete the upcoming fights section.  This will include all upcoming fights for all weight classes.  I’ll try to include verified fights, though some rumored fights will be included for bigger events.  Feel free to contact me with any fight details I might be missing.
