Bellator 35 Results

Welterweight Tournament Quarterfinals: Jay Hieron d. Anthony Lapsley (Submission – Round 1, 3:39)

While the ending of this fight may have been controversial, it likely wouldn’t have been if the fight went on another minute.  Jay Hieron was totally dominant and had Anthony Lapsley in some bad positions.  The fight was ended when Lapsley failed to respond to referee Josh Rosenthal’s inquiries.  Lapsley claimed his arm was trapped, so he couldn’t move it to confirm he was still conscious.

Really, it doesn’t matter.  Jay Hieron is a different class of fighter than Anthony Lapsley and he would have won this fight eventually.

Welterweight Tournament Quarterfinals: Lyman Good d. Chris Lozano (Unanimous Decision)

Despite making a late push, Chris Lozano fell to the former Bellator Welterweight Champion Lyman Good.  Good’s striking was extremely aggressive and very crisp, while Lozano spent a lot of the fight stymied by Good’s punches.  Good and Hornbuckle are the likely favorites in the rest of the tournament, but the former champ still has a long way to go before reclaiming his title.

Welterweight Tournament Quarterfinals: Brent Weedman d. Dan Hornbuckle (Unanimous Decision)

I really didn’t agree with this decision, as I thought that Dan Hornbuckle won the first and third rounds.  In the end, all three judges felt that Weedman won two rounds of a very entertaining fight.  Weedman and Hornbuckle had some awesome back and forth grappling, with both men closing in on multiple submissions.  Weedman was able to neutralize Hornbuckle’s length and pulled off the biggest upset of the night.

Welterweight Tournament Quarterfinals: Rick Hawn d. Jim Wallhead (Unanimous Decision)

This wasn’t a particularly notable fight, as it was basically fifteen minutes of boxing without any threats of the fight being stopped.  Rick Hawn was the more aggressive fighter and was the clear victor.  He pushed the pace and was more accurate with his striking, earning a spot in the tournament semifinals.

Women’s Featherweight: Zoila Frausto d. Karina Hallinan (Unanimous Decision)

Catchweight (176 lbs.): Waachiim Spiritwolf d. Jaime Jara (Split Decision)

Featherweight: Brandon Bender d. Josh Herrick (Submission – Round 1, 3:42)

Bantamweight: Paul Ruiz d. Jesus Castro (TKO – Round 1, 1:17)
