MMA News – April 1, 2011

  • Rich Franklin is aiming to return to the UFC this summer, though it’s not clear if he’ll fight at light heavyweight or middleweight.  My choices would be Phil Davis or Alexander Gustafsson at 205 and Chris Leben at 185.
  • All fighters on the main card of Bellator 39 have made weight.  I think that Jeff Curran has a real shot of winning this fight, but Eddie Alvarez is a very tough fighter.  This is not going to be a cakewalk for Bellator’s Lightweight Champion.
  • Brock Lesnar was hit by a car!  The Ultimate Warrior has been signed by the UFC!  Telia Tuli is opening a chain of BBQ restaurants!  Blah blah blah, April Fools hijinks!

April 2011 Fighter Rankings

April 1, 2011 Leave a comment

The April 2011 fighter rankings have been added to the site, while the March 2011 rankings and results have been archived.  Here are the changes from the last month.

Heavyweight

  • Mirko Filipovic and Jon Madsen both dropped out of the top 25 after losses, making way for Sergei Kharitonov and Travis Browne.
  • Despite having been inactive, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira remains ranked since he’s currently having a fight scheduled.  He’s still in the UFC heavyweight picture and deserves his spot in the rankings.

Light Heavyweight

  • Jon Jones became the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion during the month, catapulting him to the top spot.  Mauricio Rua fell down to number four.
  • Phil Davis’ win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira moved him into the ninth spot, while Nogueira dropped to 12.
  • Dan Henderson’s Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title win moves him to 8, with “Feijao” Cavalcante falling to 13.

Middleweight

  • A loss to Chris Weidman dropped Alessio Sakara from the rankings and allowed Alexander Shlemenko to take the 25th spot.
  • Wanderlei Silva, though inactive, is still ranked.  A fight with Vitor Belfort has been rumored for UFC Rio.

Welterweight

  • Dan Hardy’s loss to Anthony Johnson dropped him to 22nd, while “Rumble” Johnson shot up to the 17th spot.
  • Dan Hornbuckle fell from the rankings after losing in the Bellator Welterweight Tournament quarterfinals to Brent Weedman.  Siyar Bahadurzada is now the 25th ranked fighter.

Lightweight

  • Jim Miller won impressively over Kamal Shalorus, shooting him over the inactive Kenny Florian for the 6th spot.  Florian will be moving to Featherweight, so this move was inevitable.
  • Kurt Pellegrino looked unimpressive against Gleison Tibau, but I still think he won that fight.  I’ve dropped Pellegrino for his performance, but Tibau hasn’t done enough to warrant a spot in the top 25.
  • Joe Stevenson was dominated by Danny Castillo, which allowed Yves Edwards to climb back into the rankings.

Featherweight

  • Erik Koch has gone from unranked to number 18 on the power of his impressive knockout win over Raphael Assuncao, who moved from 16 to 22.
  • Yuji Hoshino has been inactive and dropped from the rankings.  I believe he’s been dealing with injuries, but I can’t find where Hoshino has been mentioned in match-making discussions.

Bantamweight

  • Damacio Page lost a second straight fight, this to Brian Bowles.  Page was quickly submitted but is still a very good fighter.  I dropped him one spot, as Hiroshi Nakamura is on a three fight winning streak punctuated by a huge victory over Masakazu Imanari.

Flyweight

  • There were no changes for the month, though a note should be made for Yuki Shojo.  Shojo has been inactive for more than a year, but has a fight scheduled in April and will keep his top 5 ranking.

Women’s Middleweight

  • Three big names have been added to these rankings: Gina Carano, Erin Toughill, and Kelly Kobald.  Kobald and Toughill have April 2011 fights, while Carano is scheduled to get back in action this June.  In anticipation of these returns, these fighters have been ranked.
  • Ronda Rousey, bronze medal winner in judo at the 2008 Olympics, also debuts.  Her win over Ediane Gomes was very impressive for her MMA debut and she enters the rankings at number 11.

Women’s Welterweight

  • No change.

Women’s Lightweight

  • Angela Magana will be returning to MMA on April 8, so she is now ranked at the 11th spot.

Women’s Featherweight

  • No change.
