Bellator 40 Results

Welterweight: Ben Askren d. Nick Thompson (Unanimous Decision)

Ben Askren completely imposed his will on a good veteran fighter, earning a hard-fought unanimous decision victory.  Askren uses his wrestling as good as any fighter in MMA and he’s about to get a whole lot more dangerous.  Askren will be joining Roufusport in Milwaukee, training with fighters like Anthony Pettis, Pat Barry, Matt Mitrione, and Erik Koch.  I feel bad for the winner of the Welterweight Tournament finals, as Ben Askren is turning into a great MMA fighter very quickly.

Welterweight Tournament Semifinals: Jay Hieron d. Brent Weedman (Unanimous Decision)

Brent Weedman was very competitive with Hieron and was briefly in control during the early stages of this fight.  Jay Hieron proved to be too much for Weedman, using solid boxing and good ground skills to win this fight.  Hieron will fight Rick Hawn in the Welterweight Tournament finals and I think Hieron will be the early favorite.  It will be interesting to see if Hawn busts out some more of his judo in the finals.

Lightweight Tournament Semifinals: Michael Chandler d. Lloyd Woodard (Unanimous Decision)

Chandler used smothering wrestling to control this fight, preventing Lloyd Woodard from doing much of anything.  Chandler will need to use every bit of his wrestling against Patricky Freire in the Lightweight Tournament finals.

Heavyweight: Eric Prindle d. Josh Burns (TKO – Round 2, 5:00)

This was two fat friends punching each other until the doctor said “no mas” for Josh Burns.

Welterweight: Tyler Stinson d. Nathan James (Split Decision)

Welterweight: David Rickles d. Dylan Smith (Submission – Round 1, 3:32)

Lightweight: Michael Osborn d. Cody Carrillo (TKO – Round 1, 1:27)
