MMA News – April 11, 2011

  • The June 18 Strikeforce card is being finalized, with heavyweight bouts between Chad Griggs/Valentijn Overeem and Daniel Cormier/Shane del Rosario.  I am really thrilled to see Griggs fighting again.  This guy has defied expectations twice and has excited fans in the process.  All this from a guy who was just brought in to lose to Bobby Lashley.
  • The UFC has had a busy few days of putting fights together: Cody McKenzie vs. Bart Palaszewski at UFC 130, James Head vs. Nick Ring at UFC 131, and Joe Lauzon/Curt Warburton, Matt Mitrione/Christian Morecraft, and Edward Faaloloto/Michael Johnson at the fourth UFC on Versus card.  James Head is coming off a big win over former UFC middleweight Gerald Harris, while Mitrione/Morecraft could be a very fun one.
  • After his loss to Ben Askren at Bellator 40, Nick Thompson has retired from MMA.  Thompson isn’t even 30 years old, but has over 50 MMA fights, has fought for all major promotions, and has contended for world titles.  I’m sure losing four straight isn’t how he wanted to end things, but Nick Thompson had a full career and is lucky to have a family, a new career, and a long life to look forward to.
