MMA News – May 9, 2011

  • Zuffa has expanded preexisting medical coverage for its fighters.  Along with coverage for in-cage injuries, the UFC is now offering coverage for accidents that occur in training or anywhere else outside the cage (auto accidents, falling down the stairs, etc.)  This is a really great move by the UFC as it adds some extra protection to fighters.  It surely benefits the UFC, as it ensures that fighters get the best coverage and return promptly from injury.  Regardless of any ulterior motives (which, frankly, I could care less about), this is an awesome move by Zuffa to take care of fighters for Strikeforce and the UFC.
  • Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard at UFC 130 has been postponed due to injuries to both fighters.  Very disappointing news as this rematch was sure to be another great fight at 155 lbs.  It doesn’t sound like there will be a replacement fight added to the card, so UFC 130 is a little less deep right now with Rampage/Hamill and Mir/Nelson as the top fights.
  • DREAM’s Fight for Japan is really going to be phenomenal.  Shinya Aoki vs. Jamie Varner and Koichiro Matsumoto vs. Takeshi Inoue have been added to this card at the end of the month.  I have to be honest, I’ve never watched a live MMA event from Japan.  How is that going to work?  Will I get to watch a stream somewhere online?  Do I pay for it?  Also, will it be at some crazy time of day?  I really want to see this card.
  • Douglas Lima, MFC’s reigning Welterweight Champion, has joined Bellator.  Lima has done pretty well for himself in the Canadian promotion, last defeating UFC veteran Terry Martin.  Lima has a loss in his career to current Bellator welterweight Brent Weedman, so that seems like a pretty easy match to make.
