MMA News – May 12, 2011

  • Dana White announced earlier this afternoon that Brock Lesnar has been forced out of his UFC 131 fight with Junior dos Santos.  Lesnar, who continues to struggle with diverticulitis, will be replaced by Shane Carwin.  Carwin was scheduled to fight Jon Olav Einemo, whose new opponent is still up in the air.  It’s very disappointing to hear this news about Lesnar, especially since it seemed like his illness was under control.  Hopefully Brock can come back from this strong and ready to fight again.
  • Tachi Palace Fights, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite promotions, has scheduled a Flyweight Title fight between champion Darrell Montague and Ian McCall.  McCall has been stellar since dropping down to 125 pounds, even defeating a man many considered to be the top flyweight in the world – Jussier da Silva.  Montague looked very good in defeating former champion Ulysses Gomez and hasn’t been in action since.  I’m just anxious to see what other fights will be on the card, but I would absolutely love to see Mamoru Yamaguchi fight da Silva.
  • Maximo Blanco, one of the better lightweights in Japan, is looking to make his American debut later this year.  Blanco seems to be considering a spot in the Zuffa family, but I wonder if Bellator might be a better fight.  Lightweight is absolutely loaded in the UFC, while the future of Strikeforce is up in the air.  Blanco might have a bit more success with a smaller promotion, especially since he’s lacking some bigger wins in his young career.
