MMA News – May 26, 2011

  • I guess we’re going to see Mirko Cro Cop in the UFC at least one more time.  Dana White is backtracking from his previous comments that the Croatian star would never appear in the UFC after his loss to Brendan Schaub at UFC 128.  I thought the Nogueira match at UFC 134 would have been a fit, but they’ll have to find something else for Cro Cop.  Rob Broughton might be a good fit as a middle tier heavyweight without a fight.
  • The UFC will return to Louisiana in September for an Ultimate Fight Night and the first two fights have been announced.  Alan Belcher will finally return from eye injuries and will take on Jason MacDonald, while Ultimate Fighter Season 11 winner Court McGee will take on Dongi Yang.  It will nice to see both Belcher and McGee back in action, as Court has also been dealing with injuries.  Belcher’s eye injury was apparently career threatening and I’m hopeful “The Talent” will return with no complications.
  • Strikeforce Challengers 16 and Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum are both set at nine fights.  Gesias Cavalcante vs. Justin Wilcox and Conor Heun vs. Magno Almeida have been added to the Overeem vs. Werdum card, while Derek Brunson will fight Jeremy Hamilton at the Challengers event.  These first few Zuffa Strikeforce shows are looking outstanding, stacked with contracted talent instead of local fighters.  As I’ve previously said, this is likely just Zuffa letting fighters fulfill contracts before merging the brands in some capacity.
  • Brian Cobb will be stepping up to fight Drew Fickett at MFC 30.  Fickett was originally slated to take on noted rapist Hermes Franca, but Cobb is a very good substitute on short notice.  Cobb is coming off wins against Radley Martinez and Kazunori Yokota and has a very real chance to win this fight on just two weeks notice.
