MMA News – June 13, 2011

  • In a match that will surely end with one fighter being decapitated, Paul Daley and Evangelista Santos will square off at the July 30 Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson card.  It will be interesting to see how Daley’s relationship with Zuffa evolves from here, but it wouldn’t surprise me if this was the beginning of the end of Paul Daley in Strikeforce.  Maybe Bellator needs a star for their welterweight tournament?
  • In upcoming fight news, Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto will take on Damacio Page at UFC 135.  Yamamoto hasn’t been a relevant fighter in more than three year, going 1-3 since returning to MMA in 2009.  He lost to Demetrious Johnson in his UFC debut earlier in the year and will look to rebound against the highly promising Page.  Of course, we all know Diamond Damacio Page to be the master of the Diamond Cutter, so I worry about Kid’s well-being in this match.
  • I’m very much looking forward to this next season of the Ultimate Fighter, as it will pit 16 bantamweights and 16 featherweights in single elimination tournaments.  I’ve heard that Dana White is interest in showing each of the fights in the opening round in some form, which would be a great way to kick off the season.  This season of the Ultimate Fighter might finally get back to producing top flight talent, as the UFC has yet to feature lighter weight classes on TUF.
  • Instead of utilizing a fourth judge, all draws in the upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix will go to a fourth round of sudden victory.  Is this something we should really be worried about?  Given the size and caliber of some of the fighters involved, I’ll be pretty surprised if more than one of these fights went to the judges’ scorecards.
