Strikeforce – Overeem vs. Werdum Results

Heavyweight Grand Prix Quarterfinals: Alistair Overeem d. Fabricio Werdum (Unanimous Decision)

The picture above sums up this fight.  Werdum constantly tried to entice Overeem into his guard, but the Dutchman consistently declined and worked to keep this fight on the feet.  Overeem got the better of the striking battles while the time spent on the ground was insignificant.  Overeem may not have looked his best, but he got the win and advances to fight Antonio Silva in the semifinals of the Heavyweight Grand Prix.  Werdum could potentially rematch Fedor after his July fight with Dan Henderson, a fight I’m sure both men would like to make.

Heavyweight Grand Prix Quarterfinals: Josh Barnett d. Brett Rogers (Submission – Round 2, 1:17)

Josh Barnett spent the majority of this fight in full mount, smothering Rogers and eventually pulling off the arm triangle in the second round.  Barnett never looked threatened and Rogers didn’t mount a bit of offense.  Barnett will go on to fight Sergei Kharitonov in the semifinals of the Heavyweight Grand Prix while Rogers really needs a step down in competition.  Daniel Cormier or Jeff Monson would make for a decent opponent, as Rogers has had no luck against the top fighters in the heavyweight division.

Heavyweight: Daniel Cormier d. Jeff Monson (Unanimous Decision)

Cormier had no interest in fighting on the ground, and instead used much improved boxing to defeat the veteran Monson.  Cormier seemed to hurt Monson at multiple occasions and he appears to have improved significantly on his feet.  This was really a bad match-up for Monson, who had absolutely no chance to take down Cormier and execute his gameplan.

Heavyweight: Chad Griggs d. Valentijn Overeem (Submission – Round 1, 2:08)

Over his last three fights, Chad Griggs has earned the reputation of being a very capable and very fun fighter.  Griggs controlled the entirety of this short fight, taking Overeem down and stopping the fight with some heavy punches.  The referee was close to stepping in and stopping the fight, but Overeem tapped due to strikes before he had the chance.

Lightweight: Jorge Masvidal d. K.J. Noons (Unanimous Decision)

Noons looks absolutely listless out there and never appeared to be in this fight.  Masvidal’s boxing was superior and he landed numerous takedowns, scoring some very easy points.  Noons had a huge hematoma over his right eye and had a deep cut in the hairline over his left eye that caused some massive bleeding.  It looks like Masvidal will be getting a shot at Gilbert Melendez’s Strikeforce Lightweight Title following this win.

Lightweight: Gesias Cavalcante NC Justin Wilcox

Justin Wilcox appeared to win the first round of this fight, but Cavalcante accidentally poked Wilcox in the eye at the beginning of the second round.  Wilcox was unable to continue and this fight was a no contest.

Lightweight: Conor Heun d. Magno Almeida (Unanimous Decision)

Magno Almeida nearly won this fight with an armbar in the second round, but Heun spent a lot of time on the ground in dominant positions.  He landed some nice punches and did some damage to Almeida, clearly taking the first and third rounds of this fight.

Welterweight: Todd Moore d. Mike Bronzoulis (Unanimous Decision)

Lightweight: Isaac Vallie-Flagg d. Brian Melancon (Split Decision)

Welterweight: Nah-Shon Burrell d. Joe Ray (Unanimous Decision)
