MMA News – June 21, 2011

  • An already stacked Jewels Fifteenth Ring event has added a stellar 115 pound contest between ranked fighters Megumi Fujii and Mika Nagano.  “Mega Megu” dealt Mika her first lost in December 2007 in what was Nagano’s first fight.  It should definitely be more of a contest in this fight as Nagano has gone 8-3 since that loss.  Fifteenth Ring has five incredible fights lined up and I’ll go on record saying this is the biggest event in women’s MMA history.  Never have so many top tier fighters been on a single card and this will be a must see for all MMA fans.
  • The UFC has made an explosive lightweight fight for UFC 135.  Takanori Gomi will face Nate Diaz as the younger Diaz brother makes his return to lightweight.  Diaz was absolutely manhandled by Rory MacDonald at UFC 129 and the move back to lightweight is a smart one.  Unfortunately, Diaz can look forward to being punched in the face by “The Fireball Kid”.
  • Jon Fitch is aiming to return from injuries at UFC 138 in San Jose this coming November in a potential rematch with B.J. Penn.  If the rumored fights for this card come to fruition, we’re looking at huge title fight between Velasquez/Dos Santos and a likely title eliminator in Fitch/Penn.  These are two fights that will likely do big business for the UFC in the fall.
  • A featherweight bout from Tachi Palace 9 featuring Isaac DeJesus and Russ Miura has been changed from a win for DeJesus to a no contest.  DeJesus’ post fight drug test was positive for marijuana, negating what was a first round TKO victory.  The win looked to have ended DeJesus’s two fight losing streak, and instead, the California fighter is now 1-3 with one no contest in his last five fights.
