MMA News – July 19, 2011

  • Chris Leben will fight Mark Munoz when UFC 138 takes place in the United Kingdom.  This would be a good fight on most cards, but the problem is that this is the main event for UFC 138 – perhaps one of the weakest main events for a numbered UFC card.  At least we know that there’s no way the UFC can charge people for a card with Mark Munoz in the main event.
  • In other UFC fight news, Tim Boetsch will fight Nick Ring at UFC 135, Nick Catone takes on Aaron Simpson at UFC 136, and Brad Pickett and Renan Barao join Leben/Munoz at UFC 138.  I really like the Barao/Pickett fight and it should be a nice main card contest – unless the UFC decides to fuck the bantamweights yet again by sticking them on the prelims.
  • Bloody Elbow has the details about ProElite’s August 27 return to MMA.  The event will take place immediately after UFC 134 on August 27 and will feature Andrei Arlovsi, Kendall Grove vs. Joe Riggs, and B.J. Penn’s brother.  I see no way that this card will be a complete disaster.

His “win” over Demian Maia didn’t convince me of anything. It might be a bit low, but I really don’t see Munoz as a top tier middleweight right now.
