September 2011 Fighter Rankings

Better late than never, the September 2011 rankings are here.  Some big changes abound at flyweight, where Tachi Palace’s August card worked to sort out the situation at 125 pounds.  We have some more minimal movement at other weight classes, but significant movement nonetheless.

  • I dropped Brendan Schaub two spots based on his loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira during the month.

Light Heavyweight

  • Forrest Griffin also moves down a spot after his loss to Shogun Rua.  Forrest didn’t seem all there and it’s not a good sign for his prospects at the top of the division.
  • Alexander Gustafsson’s impressive win over Matt Hamill was enough to move him up one spot over Rich Franklin.
  • Luiz Cane’s loss drops him from the top 25, making room for the man who defeated him – Stanislav Nedkov.

  • Rousimar Palhares looked scary against Dan Miller and it was enough to move him up a spot over Yoshihiro Akiyama.
  • Jorge Rivera, yuck.  His loss to Costantinos Philippou drops him out of the top 25 and Chris Weidman, Philippou’s teammate, enters the top 25.

  • Rory MacDonald has been great lately and his win over Mike Pyle moves him to the 16th spot.  Pyle slips from 13 to 18.
  • Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle are both out of the top 25, Hardy due to his loss to Lytle and Lytle due to retirement.
  • Mike Pierce also falls out of the rankings due to his loss to Johny Hendricks.
  • Siyar Bahadurzada and Brian Ebersole are the new entries into the top 25.

  • Jim Miller slips to 12 after his loss to Ben Henderson, who is one spot above him at 11.
  • Mizuto Hirota made a successful return from his broken arm at the hands of Shinya Aoki.  He defeated Katsunori Kikuno by decision and enters the rankings at 15.
  • Hirota’s entry bumps Kurt Pellegrino, who should have been removed months ago due to his retirement.

  • Pat Curran beat Marlon Sandro in the finals of Bellator’s summer series featherweight tournament, moving Curran from unranked to sixth, while Sandro slips to ninth.
  • Curran’s entry into the rankings means L.C. Davis is bumped out of the top 25.

  • Motonobu Tezuka loses and falls from the rankings.  Raphael Assuncao wins his bantamweight debut and enters the rankings.  It’s that simple!

  • Ugh, do I have the time to explain this mess?  Just look at the results for Tachi Palace’s tenth show.  Basically, Ian McCall and Jussier da Silva won, helping to sort out the top of the flyweight division.
  • Josh Rave has recently made a name at the 125 pound division, defeating veteran Lewis McKenzie.  He enters the rankings at number 22 and could make some noise given his track record at the lighter weight classes.
  • Pancrase’s Isao Hirose also lost during the month.  The man who defeated him, Seiji Ozuka, is very close to entering the top 25.

Women’s Middleweight

  • No change

Women’s Welterweight

  • Milana Dudieva fought during the month at 135 pounds and has entered the women’s welterweight rankings, bumping Jennifer Maia.

Women’s Lightweight

  • Michelle Ould returned to MMA after a prolonged break and enters the rankings at number 15.

Women’s Featherweight

  • No change
