October 2011 Fighter Rankings

October 1, 2011 Leave a comment

Today begins a new month and with that comes new rankings.  I’ve finally been able to complete all of the work on my site, delayed significantly because of some great college football and MMA action from today.  Here are the changes from the previous month.

Heavyweight

  • Daniel Cormier ascends greatly after his win over Antonio Silva, climbing into the sixth spot.
  • Brett Rogers drops out of the top 25 after losing to Eddie Sanchez, while Ben Rothwell’s embarrassing showing against Mark Hunt leads to his ejection.  Jeff Monson reenters the rankings at 24, while Shane del Rosario makes his debut at 25.

Light Heavyweight

  • Marcos Rogerio de Lima and Roger Gracie both had losses for Strikeforce that proved they’re still a little way from the top 25.  Entering the rankings are Mike Kyle and…Tito Ortiz.  Jesus, I can’t believe that’s happening.

Middleweight

  • Luke Rockhold enters the top ten at number eight after his victory over Jacare, who dropped down to number ten.
  • Maiquel Falcao falls out of the top 25 after a loss in Brazil, which allows the remainder of the top 25 largely unchanged after Rockhold’s entry.

Welterweight

  • Jake Ellenberger’s win over Jake Shields moves him up to the seventh spot while Shields moves down to number eight.  I also decided to bump Carlos Condit up a bit, since I was weighing his 2006 loss to Shields too heavily.

Lightweight

  • Takanori Gomi falls out of the rankings after his loss to Nate Diaz.  This allows for Kurt Pellegrino to reenter without bumping any other fighters.  Pellegrino originally announced his retirement from MMA, but will now be fighting for the Bellator promotion.

Featherweight

  • Tatsuya Kawajiri made his successful debut at featherweight over Joachim Hansen.  Kawajiri is a top lightweight and deserved immediate entry into the top five at 145 pounds.
  • Wilson Reis was bumped from the rankings because of this.

Bantamweight

  • Big changes have come at bantamweight because of tournaments from DREAM and Bellator.  Alexis Vila and Joe Warren both made their debuts at the weight for Bellator, while Bibiano Fernandes made his bantamweight debut in DREAM.  The fighters were ranked eighth, 13th, and 14th respectively.
  • Jimmie Rivera, Koetsu Okazaki, and Raphael Assuncao all fall out of the top 25 because of these three fighters entering the rankings.

Flyweight

  • Ryuichi Miki, once a top ten flyweight, made his MMA return in a losing effort to Haruo Ochi.  Ochi ascends from 25 to 11, while Miki reenters the rankings at 13.
  • I did some house-cleaning at 125 pounds, removing Louis Gaudinot, Jessie Riggleman, and Nick Cottone.  The fighters haven’t competed at flyweight in the last year and are no longer eligible to be ranked.
  • Seiji Ozuka, Kevin Dusnmoor, and Tachi Palace’s number one contender at flyweight Will Campuzano all enter the top 25.

Women’s Middleweight

  • In a bit of an upset, Amanda Nunes lost to Alexis Davis at 135 pounds during the month.  Though she wasn’t competing in the women’s middleweight division, I feel the loss was enough to hurt her stature at the weight, dropping her from four to six.

Women’s Welterweight

  • Holly Holm enters the top 15 with a win over Jan Finney, who falls out of the top 25.
  • Amanda Nunes’ debut at 135 pounds means she is now ranked at both weights, causing Alexandra Sanchez to drop out of the top 25.

Women’s Lightweight

  • Claudia Gadelha and Monica Lovato drop out of the top 15 due to inactivity, allowing Angela Samaro and Hanna Sillen to enter the top 15.

Women’s Featherweight

  • Lisa Ellis-Ward drops out of the top 15 due to inactivity and Carla Esparza is now ranked.

UFC Live – Cruz vs. Johnson Preview

October 1, 2011 3 comments

Tonight is a big night for the UFC, as they’re putting on a free title fight on the Versus network.  Dominick Cruz will defend his Bantamweight Title against Demetrious Johnson.  Cruz has looked pretty spectacular during his time as the WEC and UFC Bantamweight Champion, but we’ll have to see if Johnson can use his wrestling to control Cruz is this one.

There are some other interesting fights tonight as all three other main card contests feature ranked fighters.  Stefan Struve will take on Pat Barry in a fight where Struve holds a 12 inch height advantage.  Anthony Johnson and Charlie Brenneman look to follow up on big wins in an interesting welterweight contest while there should be fireworks in the contest between Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman.
