January 2011 Rankings Posted

January 17, 2011 Leave a comment

January 2011 fighter rankings have been posted!  The current rankings have been updated for all twelve weight classes.  I will only be updating these rankings monthly, as updating them weekly would be too huge of an endeavor to take on.  Monthly should be fine, but I’ll try to update the upcoming fights as new fights are announced.

If there are any typos or errors, get in touch with me on the contact page and I’ll be sure to correct ASAP.  These fighter rankings will be used when discussing fight previews and results.  Feel free to discuss the rankings here or on the rankings pages.

Instead of the previously referenced nine weight classes, my rankings will include the twelve major MMA weight classes.  They will be based on the weight classes specified by the Unified Rules of Combat and are detailed below.

  • Heavyweight – Men: 205.1 – 265 lbs.
  • Light Heavyweight – Men: 185.1 – 205 lbs.
  • Middleweight – Men: 170.1 – 185 lbs.
  • Welterweight – Men: 155.1 – 170 lbs.
  • Lightweight – Men: 145.1 – 155 lbs.
  • Featherweight – Men: 135.1 – 145 lbs.
  • Bantamweight – Men: 125.1 – 135 lbs.
  • Flyweight – Men: Up to 125 lbs.
  • Women’s Middleweight: 135.1 – 145 lbs.
  • Women’s Welterweight: 125.1 – 135 lbs.
  • Women’s Lightweight: 115.1 – 125 lbs.
  • Women’s Featherweight: 105.1 – 115 lbs.

These rankings will only include fighters who have competed in the last 18 months.  There will be 25 ranked men and 15 ranked women in each weight class.  Rankings will be updated every Monday in weeks where ranked fighters have competed.  I’m aiming to have all initial rankings posted by Monday, January 17.

Current Fighter Rankings – Introduction

Over the next weeks, I plan on developing my fighter rankings for all major MMA weight classes.  This includes seven weight classes for the men and two for the women.  Once they’re complete, you can find these rankings in the drop down at the top of the page.  I will try to update rankings after all Strikeforce, UFC, Bellator, and DREAM events, as well as any other noteworthy event.

My decisions will be based on my own judgment.  Fairly arbitrary, I know.  But this is my site, so we play by my rules.  I’m not going to do anything stupid like call Randy Couture a top ten fighter or keep Jon Jones and Ryan Bader off my rankings – I’ve seen too much of that shit at other MMA sites.  I’ll take a fair look at the top fighters in the world to determine who is the best of the best.

One thing I won’t do with my rankings is keep one fighter ranked at multiple weight classes.  B.J. Penn is a stellar lightweight, but right now, he’s just a welterweight in my book.  Anderson Silva may have a couple of good wins at light heavyweight, but he’s the middleweight champion of the world and that’s where he’ll be ranked.  I’ll track movement between weight classes as best as I can when updating rankings.

You’ll find the most up-to-date rankings at the dedicated pages while I’ll try to keep previous iterations archived.  With big UFC and Strikeforce events upcoming, I’ll try to have all rankings completed by the end of this coming weekend.
